The Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE), and the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) will hold the 2017 Global Grand Challenges Summit (GGCS) in Washington, D.C., United States on July 18-20, 2017.

The aim of the 2017 Summit is to inspire the next generation of engineers, policymakers, and the public to creatively address some of the most pressing issues and promising innovations of the time: the Grand Challenges for Engineering—including virtual reality, artificial intelligence, health care, climate change, and education of future engineers who will take on such challenges.

The 2017 Summit is the third in a series that focuses on the four themes of the NAE Grand Challenges for Engineering: Sustainability, Health, Security, and Joy of Living, as well as Education, and Public Engagement related to the Grand Challenges.  Through moving and inspirational presentations, experts from across the globe will outline ideas and plans to address these themes and work together to create a better world.  There will also be plenty of networking opportunities for attendees looking to connect with like-minded peers.

Key speakers include Rockefeller Foundation president and former administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Rajiv Shah, Oculus chief scientist Michael Abrash, and president and CSO of the Allen Institute for Brain Science Christof Koch.

The day before the Summit is Student Day, during which undergraduate teams from the three host countries will compete in pitching entrepreneurial ideas for addressing one or more of the NAE Grand Challenges for Engineering. The Summit will also feature student speakers from the NAE's Grand Challenges Scholars Program, a combined curricular and extra-curricular program with five components designed to prepare students for solving the grand challenges facing society in this century.
